Chevron Australia has awarded prizes to 39 school students across Western Australia as part of its annual environmental photography competition called FOCUS Environment.

This year Chevron received more than 1500 entries for the competition from 70 Western Australian schools, which esulted in 39 individual winners and 26 schools across nine categories sharing in about $30,000 in cash and prizes.

The competition, now in its eighth year, is open to Western Australian primary and secondary school students and is aimed at raising awareness among young people about protecting and managing the environment.

In 2011, there were three subject categories for entries:

  1. Nature's Mood: Encouraged images that reflect the vastness of Western Australia that could capture the elements of sun, wind, water and fire and how they impact on our environment.
  2. Animal and plant habitat: Encouraged reflections of the living environment and how important these habitats are to protecting Western Australia's rich biodiversity.
  3. People and the Environment: Focused on Western Australians who are involved in minimising their impact on the natural environment such as planting water wise gardens, recycling projects or planting vegetation to stop beach dune erosion.

"Through our involvement in FOCUS Environment we hope to encouragestudents to be aware of the world around them - to be custodians of the environment", Chevron Australia General Manager of Operational Excellence/Health, Environment and Safety Rick Biddle said at the awards ceremony. "Schools also play an important role in educating students on the need to care for our environment for the benefit of future generations. We hope that through this opportunity to FOCUS on the Environment – it helps create environmental stewards in all of you, your classmates and the students of the future."

Chevron Australia's social investment is concentrated in Perth, where Chevron Australia is headquartered, and the northwest of WA.

The competition was open to all public and private primary and secondary school students across Western Australia, with three age sections: Years 4–7, Years 8–10 and Years 11–12.
